Ted Lasso star Juno Temple is headed back to Apple TV+ with a new—and rather more genre-leaning—series. The Husbands is based on the 2024 novel by Holly Gramazio, in which a London woman comes home to find her life is not exactly how she thought it was.
Here’s the synopsis from Apple:
When Lauren (Temple) returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem — she’s never seen this man before in her life. As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new husband emerges. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?
The eight-episode series comes from lead write Miriam Battye and lead director Craig Gillespie—who make an interesting creative pair. Battye was a writer on Succession and Dead Ringers; Gillespie is arguably best known for I, Tonya, but has more recently directly episodes of Physical and Pam & Tommy. As for Temple, she’s been in everything from Fargo to Venom: The Last Dance (pictured above) to Maleficent—and is no stranger to genre tales.
The Husbands was a bestseller when it came out in 2024, and counts among its fans Jo Walton, who wrote in her monthly reading column, “It’s written by someone familiar with how SF works, and it’s not only well written (compellingly written), it isn’t shallow; it thinks through consequences and second and third order consequences, it plays the ‘what if’ game like a science fiction novel. I loved it, and I recommend it to everyone, because I really want to talk to other people who have read it. Also, it’s delightful and funny and clever.”
No premiere date has been announced.
